James
is a native of East Tennessee. While earning his bachelor's
degree in religion at Carson-Newman
College, he met and married Vivian Harrison. They
soon moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where James earned the
Master's of Divinity and served on the Southwestern Seminary's
Theological Fellowship. The Stillwells then served with
education, music, and youth at Livonia
Baptist Church in Livonia, Michigan. James was first
exposed to the innovative approaches to divorce recovery
and single adult ministry in the Detroit area. The Stillwells'
next assignment was with youth and single adults at Central
Baptist Church in Waycross, Georgia. James then served
with education and youth at Haltom Road Baptist in Fort
Worth while completing his Masters of Arts in Religious
Education. James has been at Immanuel since November of
1992. He completed the Doctor of Ministry degree from
Southern Seminary in Louisville in 1999.
James
became a Christian as a young person through the influence
of such church programs as Royal Ambassadors. His passion
for single adult ministry, divorce recovery, and premarital
counseling programs relates to his experience as an adult
child of divorce. The SHARE ministry of Immanuel (Single
People, Hand in hand, Advancing the Realities
of Eternity) is a Christ centered, multigenerational
ministry of hope and healing for single adults of the
greater Lexington area. James was the founding president of the marriage task force, Bluegrass Healthy Marriage Partnership, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening marriages in the
greater Lexington area.
James and Vivian
have four children, three of whom live in Lexington, and one who is a seminary student in Louisville. James can be
reached at JamesS@ibc-lex.org or by phone at 685-3215.
